Build Earth Live Hyperloop - an overview

Build Earth Live Hyperloop was the eighth in a series of collaborative BIM competitions created by Asite to raise awareness of cloud-based working and international developments in interoperability. The competition took place September 26th-28th with final presentations hosted by the Dubai Future Foundation in the U.A.E. on Tuesday, October 4th.

Team Mobius from France were crowned overall winners of Build Earth Live – Hyperloop. The competition was created by Asite and sponsored by Dubai Future Foundations, Vectorworks and Hyperloop One. The competition enabled six teams compete to design a prototype for a Hyperloop train that can reduce travel time between Dubai and Fujairah to 10 minutes. The seven finalists were chosen from a pool of 250 registrants from 65 teams and 29 countries around the world. The competition attracted attention from international media, one million views for the hashtag #BELHyperloop, and 130,000 interactions on Twitter

Mobius was ranked first among the finalists after the panel evaluated the projects from technical and economic perspectives, as well as their ability to reinvent transportation for passengers and cargo alike. The panel also evaluated safety and security, efficiency and sustainability.

In the finals stage, the qualifying teams presented their innovative designs before the judging panel; each design had to lay plans for parallel Hyperloop transportation systems – one for passengers, and another for cargo – that would eventually converge into one station at the finish line. Projects also had to include stations complete with spacious halls for passengers to board the trains.

A panel of expert judges had chosen 65 teams to compete in the semi-finals at a previous stage. The panel includes specialists from Asite and the world’s largest information technology companies, as well as representatives from local and international government entities taking part in the competition, and representatives of government and private-sector institutions in Dubai and the UAE, the US, and the UK.

His Excellency Saif Al Aleeli, CEO of Dubai Future Foundation, said: “Announcing the first-place winner of the Hyperloop Competition is a milestone that makes evident our resolve to move forward with our plans to build the future today. The winning project was chosen by a highly qualified panel of experts and specialists in engineering and technology; it is one of the most innovative plans to build an integrated high-speed Hyperloop transportation system that can travel from Dubai to Fujairah in a mere 10 minutes.”

H.E. added: “The first edition of Dubai’s International Hyperloop Competition has accomplished a great deal of success and commanded global attention. The contest attracted commendable international participation in a record period of time. This drive to participate in the challenge reflects Dubai’s positive international image as a world-leading platform to implement the planet’s most advanced technologies.”

Tony Ryan, CEO, ASITE, said: "Build Earth Live Hyperloop has exceeded all expectations. With thanks to His Excellency Saif Al Aleeli, backing the 8th Edition of Build Earth live, we received phenomenal international attention and team registrations. In short the response was off the Richter scale. The results speak for themselves I hope you agree".

The Finalists
The list of finalists included BIM Unlimited, a team that has participated in a number of Build Earth Live competitions in the UK, Brazil, Japan, the Dominican Republic, and Thailand. The team is made up of a group of innovators – led by Architect Ruben Fernandez – who share a passion to create innovative architecture within a collaborative BIM (building information modeling) workflow.

Also among the finalists was Hyperpoland, a team that had previously participated in tech competitions in Poland, Germany, the UAE, the US, and the UK. A group of engineers and architects, Hyperpoland have been working to develop an integrated Hyperloop transportation system. Following the positive feedback they received from the SpaceX competition, the team collaborated with specialists and experts to move the research and development forward.

Systra specializes in rail and public transport, and Team Mobius has participated in similar competitions in France, the US, and Ukraine. Meanwhile, team BIM Fusion – also a finalist – is made up of construction, design, and academic professionals representing GRAHAM Construction, Ostick + Williams (Architects), Semple McKillop (MEP), and Ulster University in Northern Ireland, UK.

The list of finalists also included rLoop, a non-profit, open-source, online think tank. The team is working to “democratize the Hyperloop” by involving the public in their process using the internet. rLoop had previously participated in similar competitions in the UK and Canada.

Rounding up the list, Hypernova is a finalist team made up of young engineering students from Cairo University, Egypt, driven by a shared passion for leading innovation through progressive and sustainable work, while the UAE’s Future Architects – a first-time participant and finalist – included a group of students from Ajman University working to create a fully-integrated hyperloop transportation system.

Most Active Teams
The semi-finals saw many international teams compete; the teams – having already participated in previous instalments of the international competition – stood out during the course of the event and managed to garner the attention of judges and spectators the world over with their designs. These include BIM Fusion, which participated in competitions in the UK and Northern Ireland; BIM Unlimited, having participated in the UK, Brazil, Japan, and the Dominican Republic; as well as Hyperloop Initiative (USA); Mobius (France and the UAE); Obermeyer (UAE); Transonic Transportation (USA); Hyperpoland (Poland and Germany); and rLoop (the US and Canada)

Also nominated as one of the most active teams in the competition was Zibsnis from Latvia; BusafiArc from Oman; and Future Architects from the UAE; as well as RB Systems (Russia); Slythunder Crew (UAE and India); Team Khaled; Team SIMENERGO (Ukraine); and last but not least, team Hypernova from Egypt.

Global Interaction with the Competition
The Hyperloop Competition attracted attention from regional and international media outlets. The challenge gained a particularly impressive following on Twitter where the dedicated hashtag scored one million views in just 48 hours. What is more, over 130,000 users from around the world interacted with tweets about the event; this reflects the singular attention that Dubai’s edition of the Hyperloop Competition is attracting from all corners of the globe.

Function or Form

As we move into the closing stages of the competition and see the designs appearing on the Adoddle platform, it is interesting to see the different approaches taken by teams.

Working in such a time intensive environment balancing focus on function with form is one of the biggest challenges. Browsing through some of the models this morning we are seeing some outstanding design, but will the time spent developing such win over the judges more so than those with a highly theoretical and practical means of operation.

Only time will tell on this one, but no doubt now this is going to be highly competitive right up to the finish.

blog_logo HYPERLOOP

Conventional Design Approach?

As the competition progresses and we see the publishing of models to Asite, an interesting topic has cropped up regarding the train design itself.

As is traditional in the vast majority of transportation means, whether it be trains, planes, cars or bikes, the matter of dealing with airflow is of great importance. From a train perspective we see the elaborate platypus design of the Japanese bullet trains, in terms of cars, airflow is the key component in any supercar or racing car design, often contributing more so than any mechanical process to the speed and handling capabilities.

The question therefore, is what happens in a new age, where in a vacuum and air flow is no longer a factor? Firstly looking at the image below, we see a highly streamlined layout, however there will be no or limited benefit to a less aerodynamically structured vessal, in favour of alternative more favourable layouts from a passenger perspective. Another key thought process for our teams, is now in the situation of a levitating train, but with no airflow to control downwards movement relying upon gravity alone, will this be stable enough to ensure safe transit?

Build Earth Live - a Global BIM Competition

Teams across 26 countries are collaborating against the clock to win Build Earth Live Hyperloop.

Here is a snapshot of #BELhyperloop's Global reach.

blog_logo HYPERLOOP

Collaboration Is Key

As we move into the second half of the competition, we see how teams are making real use of the collaboration tools on Asite to develop their designs. Discussion around every aspect of the project is essential for those looking to win the top awards and join as out here in Dubai.

Despite relatively limited training, it is great to see the number of teams embracing the platform and putting it to good use. We expect an increasing amount of activity moving to the latter stages.

For those a little less confident, Asite have provided training videos to guide you if needed.

blog_logo HYPERLOOP

Station Modelling

One of the biggest challenges facing teams developing the station designs, is how to deal with the desert climate of the UAE. Currently we see the majority of buildings dependent upon air conditioning and while we wholly anticipate this to be an element of the station design, we actively encourage the use of innovative design to reduce dependency on this.

Key elements to consider will be sun shielding, perhaps the use of a brise soleil shielding system, along side this the orientation of the station to protect, where possible, from the sun. In addition the use of materials plays a major factor. We see widespread use of steel and glass in the skyscrapers of current, but would a more thermally efficient material be of better use?

Hyperloop Route

We are intrigued to see the approaches to different route designs for the hyperloop. The balance of large radii curves opposed to tight curves located close to points of low speed at stations is an interesting one.

We await to see any speed modelling should any teams wish to look in more detail at how the travel times will be affected by such approaches. Looking over the recently published files we see the variation in routes that each team must be facing and a suggestion of options. While supporting calculations are not required, there should be some consideration of the cost of design against the cost impact of a slower route. Also a factor in this is how the bends will be banked to ensure safe traversing of the route.

This sponsorship underscores the extraordinary level of interest from the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector in this global infrastructure innovation and raises the profile of the competition. Now in its eighth series, Build Earth Live engages the worldwide BIM community to develop and share their skills within competing teams.
Hyperloop Tech will join the competition’s Headline Sponsor, Vectorworks, in sponsoring the global 48hr BIM competition.
Nathan Doughty, Asite COO, said “BEL Hyperloop will focus on the infrastructure challenges around one of the most exciting innovations of our time in transportation technology - the Hyperloop concept. Hyperloop is a disruptive innovation that could radically alter the world we live in - for the better - and we are excited to see what concepts the teams create in May!”

Update on the brief for Hudson Yards

Insight into the brief.

A query presented by the One WYG team with regards to the brief.

Question;
Can you clarify on the brief are we meant to design around the existing context ie: should we be building ‘over the rail yard’

Or design around as if we were are integrating into the Hudson yard development? Brief can be interpreted either way i think?

Any steer you can give would be helpful

Answer;

Our intention with the brief was that the teams should design within the published MasterPlan published by the Hudson Yards project (ie on top of the steel platform which will be constructed above the existing rail yards) - but replacing the existing green space and residential building with a new design for the sports arena and adjacent residential tower.

If you have any further questions please feel free to tweet us @buildearthlive !

BNYL High Level Brief Announced!

We are excited to release the first high-level details of the design brief for Build New York Live 2015, sponsored by Vectorworks.   This release frames the context of the design challenge ahead for the BNYL teams and should enable teams to begin the creative process ahead of the actual commencement of the competition on Monday the 21st at Noon EDT - without giving away any of the finer detail which will be needed to start designing.  On Monday at noon New York time the full and detailed design brief will be released and the 48-hour event will be off!   And now - the high level brief:

Hudson Yards - Community Outreach Sports Facility & Residential Tower
Midtown West, Manhattan, New York

Introduction and Background

  • Hudson Yards is an area isolated for decades by a massive, open rail yard which is being redeveloped as part of ‘The Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project’.
  • The project is a joint venture between the New York City Department of City Planning and Metropolitan Transportation Authority to encourage development on Manhattan's far West Side along the Hudson River in New York City – and is being delivered by property developers Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group.
  • Hudson Yards will be the largest private real estate development in the history of the United States and the largest development in New York City since Rockefeller Center.
  • Strategically located between 10th and 12th avenues from West 30th to West 34th Street, Hudson Yards is at the center of the metropolitan region with unsurpassed connections to commuter rail service, the subway system, the West Side Highway, the Lincoln Tunnel and ferries along the Hudson River.
  • Hudson Yards is set to become the epicenter of Manhattan’s New West Side.
  • The neighborhoods surrounding Hudson Yards, including Chelsea, West Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen are buzzing with chic art galleries, innovative restaurants and bars, and highly respected international fashion and design. These neighborhoods are growing at five times the rate of the rest of Manhattan.
  • It is anticipated that more than 24 million people will visit Hudson Yards every year.
  • The redevelopment of Hudson Yards will ultimately include more than 17 million square feet of commercial and residential space, 5 state-of-the-art office towers, more than 100 shops, restaurants, approximately 5,000 residences, a unique cultural space, approximately 14 acres of public open space, a 750-seat public school, and a luxury hotel with approximately 200 rooms.
  • The redevelopment of Hudson Yards is divided in two main parts: ‘Western Yard’ and ‘Eastern Yard’ divided by the 11th avenues.
  • The design and construction of Hudson Yards is divided into two phases.
  • The first phase includes the redevelopment of the ‘Eastern Yard’; which contains various facilities / buildings such as 10 Hudson Yards, 15 Hudson Yards, 30 Hudson Yards, 35 Hudson Yards, 50 Hudson Yards, 55 Hudson Yards, The Culture Shed, The Shops and Restaurants, the Public Square, the new No. 7 train Subway station and Hudson Park & Boulevard which is already designed and publicly available at http://www.hudsonyardsnewyork.com/ and / or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_Yards_Redevelopment_Project
  • The second phase includes the redevelopment of the ‘Western Yard’ and is planned to include seven residential towers, an office building known as the ‘West Tower’, and a public school serving Pre-K to eighth grade students

The Challenge

Build New York Live 2015 challenges participants to reimagine the Western edge of the Western Yard site at Hudson Yards. The high-level brief is take advantage of the riverfront position and all of the transport links that are inherent to the site to create a vision for sports-based community outreach which becomes a draw for the entire metro region – and a community resource available to all New Yorkers regardless of socio-economic position.  The space should serve as a bridge connecting communities around New York and bringing them into the center of Manhattan through sports.

This new and imaginative flagship project should build on the community spirit of NYC to deliver an indoor sports facility over the Western Rail Yard called ‘Hudson Yards Sports Arena’, integrated into High Line public space adjacent to it and to design the adjacent Residential Tower just to the east in a sympathetic and integrated way.

'One WYG' takes on 'Build New York Live' BIM competition

Press release from the ONE WYG team. London, UK 18th September 2015

Team ‘One WYG’ consists of 12 different work streams within WYG, from architectural design to environmental planning, all based at various locations around the UK, with the additional input from specialist external consultants.

Our industry is shifting towards a digital future with the recent release of the Digital Built Britain Strategy and the construction 2025 targets. Build New York Live is part of a broader training initiative that we are adopting as we move our multifaceted approach towards BIM level 2 compliance so we can continue to deliver best practice in service.

There are many benefits to taking part in Build New York Live. First of all, this is a high profile event that presents a very unique training opportunity. Working in a very realistic setting, participants are under very high pressure to deliver solutions within very tight time constraints, but without the inhibiting financial risk.

It is also a perfect environment for our team members who operate in separate services to interact more with one another. This collaborative space enables people to come together and share more valuable input into a design.

A group of students from Well Acre Acedemy in Manchester will also join the team to observe the competiton and lend a help hand. At a time when skills shortage is a concern in the industry, it is our duty to promote professional development in all our disciplines and this represents a perfect opportunity to do so.

The experience of Build New York Live may only last 48 hours, but it is expected that all participants will gain knowledge and experience that can be transferred and applied to our day-to-day operations.

Ultimately, the greatest gain will be for our clients, who will benefit from our BIM expertise and leading edge outlook.

For more information visit the competition's website www.buildearthlive.com or contact Johnathan Munkley, BIM Director, johnathan.munkley@wyg.com

Newsflash - Build Earth Live website

Prestigious & globally renowned Build Live BIM design competitions merge under new Build Earth Live website

As you all know, in previous years of the Build Live events, we created a separate website for each competition. Moving forward we’ve decided bring them all together under one umbrella ‘Build Earth Live’ (www.buildearthlive.com) under which each edition will be visible.

Asite are proud sponsors of the Build Earth Live events and our cloud platform, Adoddle, powers the collaboration and interoperability for the competitions. Adoddle enables team members a chance to experience the simplicity and power our platform can deliver on any project. We wish all the teams the best of luck and if you need any help utilising the Adoddle feel free to contact our Support Team on support@asite.com, they are available 24/7/365!
